Financing sustainability improvements
Making your home more sustainable is a great investment, as you will quickly see your energy bill decrease and your property value increase. Do you have insufficient personal funds? There are still plenty of financing options available.
Making your home more sustainable with a loan
It is also possible to borrow money for sustainability improvements. Although the interest rate on consumer credit is often higher than on a mortgage loan, the costs for taking out consumer credit are significantly lower. Additionally, the loan term often better matches the lifespan of, for example, the solar panels it finances.
Subsidies for sustainability improvements
If you want to make your home more sustainable but have insufficient personal funds, you can check what support your municipality offers. Some municipalities, for example, provide a Sustainability Loan. There are also national subsidies available, such as the Energy Saving Loan

Financing sustainability improvements: a step-by-step plan
How does financing sustainability improvements for your home actually work? We have outlined it for you in five steps
Exploring your options
Before making your home more sustainable, it is important to do thorough research. What is the current condition of your home, and where can the biggest improvements be made? Talk to different parties and request quotes to get an idea of the costs. Consider how you want to finance these costs: partially from your savings, by taking out an (additional) sustainability mortgage, applying for a loan, or perhaps through subsidies provided by your municipality
Consultation with the mortgage advisor
Are you considering taking out an (additional) mortgage or refinancing your current mortgage to finance sustainability improvements? A mortgage advisor can outline the possibilities for you. They calculate how much additional mortgage you can obtain and how this will affect your monthly costs. The first consultation at De Hypotheker is free of charge and without obligation.
Arranging your mortgage
While you are busy planning the work, your mortgage also needs to be arranged. In many cases, this requires an appraisal of your current property. Your mortgage advisor will inform you about which additional documents the mortgage lender requires from you.
Signing the mortgage offer
The mortgage lender provides a mortgage offer, which you sign. Sometimes, your current mortgage already includes a higher registered mortgage amount, meaning you do not need to visit the notary. If your loan does not fit within the existing mortgage registration, a second mortgage will be taken out, and you will need to visit the notary.
Time to make your home more sustainable!
Once your mortgage is finalized, the borrowed amount will be deposited into your account. You can use this to pay for the sustainability improvements.
Frequently asked questions about making your home more sustainable
These are questions our customers often ask us
How much can I borrow for the sustainability improvement of my house?
What are the benefits of sustainability improvement?
here are plenty! Because you consume less energy, your monthly costs decrease. Additionally, your property value may increase when you have a better energy label. Insulation also provides more living comfort and a healthier indoor climate, and last but not least, it is, of course, good for the environment.
Which energy-saving measure allows me to benefit from lower monthly costs the fastest?
Since energy prices have become very high, many people wonder which sustainability measure will lower their energy bill the fastest. Insulation is often a good first step, with a relatively short payback period. A well-insulated house also increases the benefits of other energy-saving measures. However, to determine which measures are best for your home, it is advisable to consult an energy advisor.
What is a green mortgage?
More and more mortgage lenders are offering special green mortgages or sustainable mortgages. Often, you receive an interest discount if your property meets certain sustainability requirements. A mortgage advisor can map out which lenders offer such mortgages and which mortgage best suits your situation.
