Moving up the property ladder: Sjoerd and Lotteā€™s story

Sjoerd (35) and Lotte (32) moved from an apartment in the centre of Rotterdam to a spacious corner house on a quiet street in Bergschenhoek (a village north of Rotterdam) after the arrival of their son Mads (3). While they now enjoy a large garden and private parking, their monthly expenses have actually decreased. They are happy to share how they made this happen.

"When we bought our first home in 2015, mortgage rates were much higher than they are now. Since we lived in an apartment, we also paid a substantial amount to the Homeowners' Association (VvE) each month.

When we bought our current home in Bergschenhoek in 2019, the interest rate was very low. We also brought a significant surplus value from the sale of our apartment. Furthermore, in our new home, we no longer pay any VvE fees, and we no longer need an expensive parking permit as we now have three private parking spaces. Because of all these factors, we are now paying dozens of euros less each month than we were in Rotterdam."
